Position Summary:

The Manager of Public Events provides leadership and strategic planning for the College of Musical Arts. This position is self-directed and requires an individual with the ability to formulate strategies that help the College define objectives and outcomes that reinforce the University’s marketing/communications plan, and engages the BGSU campus community, alumni, and donors through music events. The Manager of Public Events reports to the Dean of the College of Musical Arts with a dotted-line report to the Director of Marketing in the Office of Marketing and Communications. Core responsibilities include: managing programming and operational aspects of College public events, developing College marketing strategies with overall consistency in messaging, and supervising the public events technical and office staff in executing strategy.

Essential Duties, Tasks and Responsibilities:

Marketing and Communications

  • Identify and contribute to discussions within the College regarding marketing, event programming, and recruitment/retention to ensure that the College’s priorities are being met. Develop and establish key strategies and messages while working creatively with photographers, graphic designers and writers.
  • Act as chief liaison between the Office of Marketing & Communications and College for marketing and communications needs.
  • Direct projects while meeting multiple deadlines that result in College satisfaction, maintaining quality control and consistent standards, conveying clearly the University’s image.
  • Responsible for maintaining the College website, social media, mass email, and other forms of communication, with assistance of other public events staff members.

Event Planning and Scheduling

  • Work collaboratively with the College faculty and staff to schedule all events and maintain an annual calendar of public events that will maximize the college’s impact and benefit critical areas within the College. Provide leadership and direction in the planning of high quality events and residencies to ensure the College’s priorities are being met.

Operations and Supervision of Staff

  • Manage financial and human resources for maximum effectiveness and sustainability. Delegate and manage responsibilities to public events staff. Develop contracts, policies and protocols for the public events office. General oversight for area budget and special events program budget.

Strategic Planning

  • Proactively develop relationships with external stakeholders, local and regional relevant business and trade associations, and nonprofits to develop and promote programs and cultivate new audiences.
  • Identify public events communication and marketing objectives. Evaluate and measure actual project outcomes against desired outcomes and make recommendations or adjustments for the future. Provide insight regarding University priorities to help integrate objectives.
  • Prepare a year-end report providing overall analysis of events.

Knowledge, Skills or Abilities

  • This candidate will have event management experience from scheduling to real time execution.
  • Must possess strong communication and labor management skills.
  • Be up to date on industry trends, which includes the surrounding landscape.
  • Experience working with new media and technology to create opportunities to inform and/or inspire new programs and material.
  • Demonstrate experience in social and digital media, which includes being able to measure social media presence.
  • Must show initiative, adaptability, resourcefulness, dependability, and ability to take action.
  • Must be a team player, maintain a positive attitude and an understanding and support of institutional values.
Minimum Qualifications & Salary:

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree is required in a related field of music, communications, journalism, marketing or business.  Degree must be conferred at the time of application.  

The following experience is required:

  • 3-4 years of experience managing a variety of special events (e.g. opening day events, live performances, award ceremonies. etc.), for ticketed and non-ticketed audiences is required.


Preferred Qualifications

Master’s degree is preferred. 

The following experience is preferred:

  • Experience in higher education event planning and programming is preferred. Significant experience with Classical music
  • 1-2 years of experience working in a Web Content Management system creating and maintaining websites. 

 

Salary

Full-time, Administrative staff position available. Administrative Grade Level 357. Salary is commensurate with education and experience. Full benefit package available.
