Graduate Studies at the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) invites applications for the Florence Gaskins Harper Endowed Chair, a full-time faculty position with leadership responsibilities in The Hurwitz Center, a research center for art education. MICA is an art and design college nationally known for its dedication to teaching excellence and its long history and record of distinction in art education and community engagement practices at national and international levels.

The Florence Gaskins Harper Endowed Chair is a faculty position with administrative, research, teaching, and service responsibilities on a multi-year renewable contract in a non-tenure institution beginning August 2020.
Graduate Studies at MICA seeks a candidate with significant professional experience in art education and community engagement to serve as a full-time faculty member and thought leader of The Hurwitz Center, a research center dedicated to the advancement of scholarship in art education at MICA.
The Florence Gaskins Harper Endowed Chair serves as the administrative lead of The Hurwitz Center and will work to promote the missions of The Center and the College, and translate their tenets into an action plan through network building, collaborative planning, and programmatic activities, such as lectures, symposia, research and publications. We welcome candidates whose experiences in teaching, scholarship, professional practice, and community contributions have prepared them to value and advance diversity, equity, inclusion, globalization and excellence at MICA. Successful candidates will have a dynamic record of research, scholarship and/or practice in art education and community engagement and a critical awareness of innovative practices and emerging subject areas in the field. As a contributor to the field, the Florence Gaskins Harper Endowed Chair will continue MICA's legacy of leadership in art education and community engagement at state, national, and international levels. Ideal candidates will demonstrate commitment to advocacy for the arts in the schools and in community settings, and an ability to build relationships, networks, and connections that bring people together across cultures, disciplines and communities to advance art education at local, regional, national and international levels.
The Endowed Chair will articulate a research agenda for The Center, catalyzing research studies relevant to education in school systems, MICA, and the community at large, inclusive of diversity at the intersections of race, ethnicity, gender, and class. The Chair will also serve as an advisor, mentor and guide to MICA faculty and students pursuing research in the field of art, design education and community engagement. Ideal candidates will demonstrate the ability to identify and secure funding for research or projects at The Center.
The faculty position is the equivalent of 18 credits per year, or 3 - 4 days per week on campus, split between teaching and administrative roles. The position receives a three-credit course release each semester for the leadership of The Center and teach in MICA's graduate level field-based programs (MA in Teaching, MA in Art Education, MFA in Community Arts, Philosophy & Pedagogy, Curatorial Practice, or Social Design) as needed.
The Florence Gaskins Harper Endowed Chair is expected to contribute to the life of Graduate Studies and the College that flourishes through cross-programmatic collaboration, committee work, community engagement, and other institution-related duties. All full-time faculty at MICA are expected to pursue research and/or professional engagements that contribute to the educational mission of the College.
The Endowed Chair reports to the Vice Provost for Research and Graduate Studies and will have an initial term of three years leading to five-year renewable terms following MICA's evaluation guidelines and timeline for “faculty with administrative responsibilities.” The position oversees operating and restricted budgets that support the activities and programming of The Hurwitz Center. The position does not supervise faculty nor oversee academic degree programs.
- MA, MFA, PhD degree or equivalent professional experience in art education and community engagement through practice with organizations, school systems, and/or scholarship
- Demonstrated commitment to uphold the advancement of diversity and equity in art and design education
- Demonstrated leadership experience as a contributor or advocate for art education at local, state, national and/or international levels through public presentations or professional publication of art education or community engagement theory and practice
- Demonstrated experience developing research projects and securing adequate funding
- Teaching experience at elementary and/or secondary level or experience in other educational settings, such as museums, after school programs, residencies, or fellowships
- College teaching experience
- Demonstrated ability to work in collaborative situations including, but not limited to, team teaching, project-based learning, or partnered research projects
- Knowledge of current literature and emerging practices in the field of art education and community engagement
- Experience with program management, faculty mentorship, and/or other administrative responsibilities
- Excellent communication skills
- Evidence of involvement in innovative project, program, or curriculum design
- Studio expertise and/or creative practice.
- Active membership in relevant professional association(s)

The Hurwitz Center is a research center dedicated to the advancement of scholarship in the field of art education. Named after distinguished scholar and practitioner Dr. Al Hurwitz, the center continues MICA's 100-year legacy of excellence and leadership in art education and provides a space, resources and programming to promote faculty and their research in art and design education. The Hurwitz Center is a designated space for graduate students, faculty and staff in art education and community engagement pedagogy and practice in the Fred Lazarus IV Graduate Center and includes The Hurwitz Library (the core of which is Dr. Hurwitz's personal library), administrative and faculty offices, gallery, reception area, workspace and shared kitchen for faculty and students, classroom and project room.
The Hurwitz Center has an operating budget that supports the daily operations of the center. Its programmatic activities are supported by an endowed fund and the generous donations of the Pullman and Hurwitz families.
About the Florence Gaskins Harper Endowed Chair:
Florence Gaskins Harper created the endowed faculty chair in order to promote the teaching of art in a way that provides substantial benefits to MICA and opportunities to the College's students. Karen Lee Carroll, Ed.D. was the first to hold this appointment at MICA. In this role, she modeled an extraordinary career in the field of art education and had an exceptional impact on students and colleagues. In addition to her work to develop innovative art education programs at MICA, Dr. Carroll contributed critical research and was widely recognized for her advocacy for art education in the state and nationally. She contributed first on the planning committee and then on the board of the Baltimore Design School, a groundbreaking charter school specializing in design education. She also received the NAEA National Award for Distinguished Service to the Profession and was twice named the National Arts Educator Award and once the NAEA Distinguished Fellow. Dr. Carroll was recognized for her service to the institution and the field with MICA's Medal of Honor on the occasion of her retirement in 2018.
