The Association of Arts Administration Educators (AAAE) seeks a dynamic, self-motivated Executive Director to lead the organization. AAAE consists of more than 150 member programs, all training and equipping students in arts leadership, management, entrepreneurship, cultural policy, and more. Our network of faculty and their alumni are the cornerstones of local arts communities across the globe. AAAE serves as a convener, a resource, and an advocate for formal arts administration education.

The Executive Director is the leader of the organization and, in partnership with the board, is responsible for the strategic growth and development of the organization and works closely with board committees to plan and implement board initiatives. The Executive Director serves as the principal liaison between the public, association members, and the board of directors. The Executive Director coordinates with contract staff to produce the annual AAAE conference and day-to-day operations of the association including organizing and implementing membership development, serving constituents, and maintaining the organization’s financial systems, web site, membership databases, bookkeeping and reporting.

Working remotely, the Executive Director of AAAE reports directly to the executive committee of the board of directors.

Salary range is $40,000 - $50,000 and benefits are negotiated as part of the compensation package

Position Description
TITLE:  Executive Director
REPORTS TO:  Executive Committee via Board Chair

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTION
The Executive Director is the leader of the organization and, in partnership with the board, is responsible for the strategic growth and development of the organization. The Executive Director works closely with board committees to plan and implement board initiatives. The Executive Director serves as the principal liaison between the public, association members, and the board of directors. The Executive Director coordinates with contract staff to produce the annual AAAE conference and day-to-day operations of the association, for organizing and implementing membership development, serving constituents, and maintaining the organization’s financial systems, web site, membership databases, bookkeeping and reporting.

Working remotely, the Executive Director of AAAE reports directly to the executive committee of the board of directors.

 

STRATEGIC PLANNING
Together with the board, the Executive Director is responsible for the association’s strategic planning and its implementation. The Executive Director translates board policies into action plans, including business plans and short- and long-term strategies.

 

ANNUAL CONFERENCE
In partnership with the conference committee, the Executive Director is responsible for planning, implementing and evaluating  the annual AAAE conference. The Executive Director negotiates and coordinates contracts for services with the host site and vendors.  

 

MEMBERSHIP
The Executive Director is responsible for planning and implementing an annual campaign for membership retention and development.  The Executive Director is responsible for member communications, processing of applications, billing and record keeping.

 

COMMUNITY RELATIONS AND OUTREACH
The Executive Director develops and maintains personal relationships with major individual, corporate and foundation supporters, and builds and maintains relationships with the media and governmental bodies.  The Executive Director represents AAAE in dealings with arts advocacy groups, community and civic organizations, educational institutions, regional arts organizations, and national and international organizations. The Executive Director is responsible for maintenance of the AAAE website.

 

DEVELOPMENT
The Executive Director oversees all fundraising and development activities including annual campaigns, government and corporate grants, special fundraising events, and individual and corporate fundraising.

 

FINANCIAL
The Executive Director is responsible for overall financial oversight of AAAE including day-to-day operations, financial policies and procedures, payroll, annual budgeting, bookkeeping and accounting, monitoring income goals and expenses, reporting financial information to the board and members, and other business systems. Together with the board treasurer the Executive Director is responsible for overall sound business practices.

 

BOARD AND GOVERNANCE
The Executive Director assists the board in building and maintaining an active membership including identifying and interviewing potential board members, assisting with board committees, ensuring board member utilization, and working one-on-one with board members on specific projects and initiatives, and facilitating board meetings.

 

OTHER
The Executive Director attends all board and committee meetings and is jointly responsible with the board for implementation of all board actions.  The Executive Director assists the board president and committee chairs to determine the logistics, scheduling and agenda for all executive, board and board committee meetings. Most meetings are held online with the exception of the fall board retreat and the board meeting held at the annual conference.

The Executive Director supervises several contract staff members, including a membership assistant, graphic designer, and bookkeeper. The position requires travel for meetings and conferences in furtherance of the organization’s mission. Travel costs are reimbursed by the organization.
