Program Goals and Objectives

The arts management program was founded in 1978 to prepare undergraduate students for entry level positions with community arts organizations. Particular emphasis is placed on entrepreneurship, cultural policy, human resource management, planning, funding strategies, community engagement, and arts marketing. The multidisciplinary nature of the program promotes the interrelated nature of the arts in support of interdisciplinary and collaborative programming that recognizes the relationship of the arts with other areas of human endeavor.


Arts Management is a 56 credit hour program of carefully selected courses that provide instruction in three essential areas. * History and aesthetics to insure knowledge and understanding of the arts. * Business ourses develop skills in areas of advertising, human resources, accounting, management systems, and market research. * Arts Management courses are specifically designed to integrate knowledge of business history and aesthetics and apply this knowledge to the unique needs of cultural organizations and creative entrepreneurs. Courses include: Arts Management, Law Public Policy and the Arts, Marketing the Arts, Data Literary in the Arts, Production and Distribution of Art and Managing the Creative Process. Two internships are required one with an on campus producing unit and one with a professional culutral organization or creative entrepreneur.


Any student who is admitted to Eastern Michigan University and who maintains an acceptable grade point average will be accepted and retained in the Arts & Entertainment Management program.
