Program Goals and Objectives
The QUT arts administration program provides arts graduates and practicing arts managers with an academic program that addresses the discipline of arts and cultural management, the formulation and delivery of cultural policy, cultural industries analysis, cultural planning, sponsorship, philanthropy and arts marketing, alongside the study of traditional and contemporary business theory and practice.The program has close links with the industry and government and students are encouraged to conduct research and assignments in the ‘real world’. The program core units of study are offered in intensive mode to facilitate attendance for busy arts managers or managers living in remote locations.
Administration of the Program
Susan Street is the program director. The Graduate Program in Arts Administration includes Graduate Certificate to PhD study. The Graduate Certificate (4 units) articulates to the Master of Business (12 units) by coursework or thesis. Students may select units in marketing, international business, communication or public management to complete the Masters degree. The program utilizes a wide alumni network as course and student advisers.Curriculum
The following courses are offered:Graduate Certificate in Business – 48 credit points. Semester 1 (late February) or Semester 2 (mid July) entry, part-time only for one year.
Master of Business (coursework) – 144 credit points. Semester 1 or 2 entry, full-time (3 semesters), part-time (6 semesters).
Master of Business (research) – 144 credit points. Semester 1 entry only, full-time (3 semesters), part-time (6 semesters). Comprises four coursework units which includes research methodology and 96 credit points thesis of approximately 50,000 words.
PhD (research) – three years full-time, minimal coursework, thesis up to 100,000 words.
Core units include:
Arts Administration and Society – analyses the structures and role of cultural organizations in the local, national and international community and the processes involved in administering arts in society. It focuses on the external influences on the arts through investigation of public policy, funding processes, cultural economics, strategic planning, community development, Indigenous arts, diversity and international research.
The Arts Industry – provides a general framework for the analysis of the arts and culture as an industry. It examines the operational procedures of arts organizations, arts law, the media, industrial awards and enterprise agreements, arts as a business, human resources, and multimedia developments. It concludes with an examination of cultural leadership in the community.
Marketing Arts and Culture – provides students with an understanding of the application of marketing concepts within the context of culture and the arts. It examines the principles of cultural enterprise, promotion, sponsorship, advertising, communication, market research, marketing strategies, and the development of marketing plans and campaigns for arts and cultural organizations.
Work experience is not a course component, but students are required to carry out major assignments in an organization.
The Graduate Certificate is offered to corporations or arts networks in-house in intensive mode.
Teaching faculty comprise a balance between practitioners and academics so that the course goals can be achieved.
Admissions
The Entry Requirement for the Graduate Certificate and Master of Business (Coursework) is an undergraduate degree in an appropriate field.The Entry Requirement for the Master of Business (Research) is an appropriate undergraduate degree with a GPA of 5 or an Honors degree at level IIB or better.
The Entry Requirement for PhD is a relevant first or second class division A honors degree or an appropriate masters degree (with some research experience).
Advertisements are placed in the local and national press at the beginning of the academic year.
