Program Goals and Objectives
The Arts and Cultural Management Program in South Australia was first introduced in 1979. Over the past 25 years it has evolved into one of the leading postgraduate arts management providers internationally. Located within the School of Management at the City West Campus in Adelaide, South Australia, the Program creatively contributes to the school’s comprehensive range of award programs by offering Graduate Diploma, Masters and PhD awards in arts and cultural management practice and research.The Program emphasises practical application of management theories and concepts through case study analysis, research, student projects, action learning and discussion; use of group work and peer interaction, reflecting current best practice in management; extensive use of senior and experienced managers as part-time lecturers; and input from visiting speakers, international specialists and recent graduates.
The Australian Centre for Arts Management Research (ACAMR) was created in 1997 within the Program to promote both academic and industry relevant research in arts management. Areas of research interest of current candidates includes:
* leadership in the arts
* function of the arts in modern Australian society
* rationale of government funding for the arts
* brand marketing of cultural institutions
* arts centre management in Japan
* economic issues in popular music
* economics of symphony orchestras
* museums and the internet
In January 1999, The Arts and Cultural Management Program began delivery online via the internet. This advance in the methodology of course delivery has contributed to greater diversity in the level of skills, expertise and experience students bring to the (virtual) classroom; as well as enriching curriculum content and the creation of a global dialogue on arts management issues. The philosophy of the Program overall is that:
* a vigorous, vibrant and creative cultural life is essential to a balanced, dynamic and healthy society
* all forms of the arts are integral to society's cultural life
* good leadership and management will strengthen the arts and is essential to the future of the sector
Administration of the Program
The Arts & Cultural Management Program is situated within the School of Management, which is part of the Division of Business of the University of South Australia. The Program Director is Stephen Boyle and Associate Professor Jo Caust leads the research activity for the program.Supporting the academic delivery of both the on campus and online programs are individual arts industry practitioners, who specialise in areas such as organisational dynamics; international cultural policy; accounting and finance; law; and marketing. Improved quality teaching is also assured through the appointment of a national industry-based Program Advisory Group.
Curriculum
Graduate Diploma in Management (Arts)The Graduate Diploma in Management (Arts) is a 36-unit program designed to be taken over two years of part-time study, although it may be completed in one year of full-time study.
The program may be undertaken by attendance on campus, online delivery, or a mixed-mode (a combination of the above).
Students are required to complete the eight courses outlined below, each involving approximately 39 hours of contact time or its equivalent online. Students should expect to devote a minimum of two additional hours of private study time for each hour of class contact.
Classes on campus are held at convenient times for working managers. This includes a combination of evening lectures and seminars, occasional weekend or weekday workshops, and subject intensives.
Classes online are delivered over an 11 week term period as per on campus delivery. Students are required to submit their work and contribute to class dialogue within the timeframes outlined in the Study Program section of each course's website.
An online intensive for Australian-based students will be conducted in Adelaide in February of each year. Students will be introduced to the online learning methodology and participate in a series of seminar sessions. Attendance at these intensives is expected.
Internationally based students are also encouraged to attend, however depending upon student numbers, other arrangements may be put in place.
