Program Goals and Objectives
The Bachelor of Science in Arts Management curriculum combines studies in music and management, theatre and management, or dance and management, to prepare students for careers in arts management, one of the arts industries, or both. Practical experiences in internship settings are included in the program of study.
The arts management program in the Conservatory of Shenandoah University is an excellent blend of the arts and business curriculums. Shenandoah Conservatory, the largest and oldest of the five schools, has created a reputation for excellence as demonstrated through our internationally recognized faculty, our extended degree opportunities in the performing arts, and our newly constructed performance facility that augments other existing on-campus performance spaces. The Harry F. Byrd, Jr. School of Business also supports the arts management curriculum. This school features a strong foundational program in management theory and practice supported by state-of-the-art multi-media technology designed to keep pace with the rapidly changing advances occurring in organizational settings.
Together, the exceptional performance opportunities provided in the Shenandoah Conservatory with the management enhancements provided by the Harry F. Byrd, Jr. School of Business create a dynamic combination very suited for the emerging or current professional in the field of arts management. The arts management course work itself brings together these diverse areas of study into a cohesive philosophy for professional preparation. As part of this curriculum, students select a performance area of concentration thus helping to create the artistic professional with organizational know-how. It is a powerful combination that allows the graduate to effectively negotiate either or both the artistic and business communities. The capstone experience in this program features an internship suited to the student's professional development goals.
There are many other features of our arts management program that set us apart from others. We have over 55 performance groups and 300 performances annually at the institution. We are located in a secure, serene, and artistically-supportive community of the beautiful Shenandoah Valley while remaining in close proximity to the excitement and world-renowned performance organizations of the nation's capital. Additionally, we have an active student group named the Organization of Arts Management Students (OAMS) that helps arts management students remain focused on their professional aspirations and builds bridges to professional arts management organizations and opportunities.
