Program Goals and Objectives

Salem's Arts Management Program is among the oldest undergraduate arts management programs in the U.S., having been established in 1978. The Program, focusing on not-for-profit arts management, offers a major in arts management as part of the Bachelor of Arts degree. It is an interdisciplinary major that combines study in the arts and accounting with courses specific to the field of arts and not-for-profit management. The program prepares students for entry-level jobs in the field of arts management and for graduate study in arts management and related fields. (The program management agrees, however, with the AAAE preference that graduate study in the field be undertaken only after sufficient field experience.) Students may concentrate their focus on either the visual or the performing arts.

Salem is a women's college, yet men above the age of 22 are allowed to earn a degree in arts management. In general, the population for this program is traditional college age women interested in a career in arts management or older women seeking to retool in a new field or gain academic credentials in an area in which they have been working.

Salem's Arts Management Program features a variety of courses specifically designed to deal with issues faced in arts management and not-for-profit management. A distinctive feature of the program is the quality of internships, both month-long in the January term and semester-long placements, which talented students have undertaken. They have ranged from Salzburg, Berlin, and Poland to Alaska, Texas and the Northeastern corridor, including, for example, a semester-long internship at the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center.
