Program Goals and Objectives
The Degree Programme in Cultural Management trains professionals needed in cultural events and organizations, private enterprises, cultural and art projects, as well as municipal and state cultural administration. The programme also enables graduates to operate as entrepreneurs in the cultural and creative industry.
Cultural managers are art and business experts and organizers. They are expected to possess strong skills in networking, communicating and developing their own work and operating environment in Finland and abroad, as well as in cross-sector cooperation aimed at promoting culture and the arts.
The degree programme is designed to allow students to strengthen their know-how and distinctive professional competence throughout their studies.
Administration of the Program
Degree Programme in Cultural Management is offered in three campuses of HUMAK. These campuses are located in Turku (West-coast of Finland), Kauniainen (near Helsinki, in South-Finland) and in Jyväskylä (Center-Finland). Total number of students is 450 and personal 30 (in 2010).
In each of the campuses there are 6-7 lecturers and one principal lecturer and approximately 100 students. Director of the programme is PhD Katri Kaalikoski. Administration office of the programme is located in Helsinki (Annankatu 12 A 17).
Curriculum
Scope of Degree: 240 ECTS/4 years.
All students begin their first year with the HUMAK Core Studies module. Students are introduced to university studies and to the profession and field of cultural managers. Students begin to reflect on their professional competence by familiarizing themselves with the portfolio process. In the first year, professional studies focus on introducing students to the work and production processes of cultural managers. First-year studies also include the first training period.
In the second year, students continue to develop their professional know-how and skills. Students focus on developing their expertise in the following areas: knowledge of the cultural operating environment, management of cultural production processes, and business know-how in cultural management.
In the third year, students focus on their professional specialization. During their advanced specialization studies, students strengthen their expertise in production processes and content production in culture and the arts. Students develop a distinctive professional competence by further specializing in cultural management in multicultural urban environments, event management, or culture as a business. In the third year, students also begin their thesis studies and present their interim portfolio.
In the fourth year, students continue developing their expertise with professional specialization studies and optional studies. The last year focuses on studies related to the thesis. Students prepare a final portfolio in which they reflect on their professional know-how and development.

Admissions
New students will be choosed to study in the programme once a year (in June). There is an entrance examination which is a maturity and aptitude test (personal and written skills). Special focus will be put on applicants suitability to work on the cultural field (their level of knowledge and previous working experience).
Students starts their studies usually after their marticulation examination (in the age of 18-19).
