Program Goals and Objectives
The arts management program was founded in 1976 to prepare undergraduate students for entry level positions with arts and cultural organizations, public and private, profit and not-for-profit. Particular emphasis is placed on such areas as cultural policy, labor relations, human resource management, planning, funding strategies, accounting and marketing. The program promotes the development of excellent communication skills to be applied in both public presentations and written proposals. Emphasis is placed on promoting the interrelated nature of the arts in support of interdisciplinary and collaborative programming that recognizes the relationship of the arts with other areas of human endeavor.
Administration of the Program
The program is housed in the College of Arts and Sciences, Department of Communication and Theatre Arts. Instruction is provided by faculty from the departments of Fine Art, Music/Dance, Theatre, Journalism and the colleges of Business and Technology. Program advisor is Ken Stevens. Professor Stevens began his career at the University of Cincinnati as a Seasongood Fellow of Public Administration and Rockefeller Fellow of Arts Management. He has produced and managed numerous theatres, commercial and not-for-profit and is president of the Michigan Legacy Art Park, a wilderness sculpture and performance facility.
