Abstract  

In this thesis, I explore the contemporary Chinese art market in three parts: First I look at the Chinese art market from the Song dynasty (960 - 1279 CE) to the end of the Mao Zedong era (1976); then I trace the development of the contemporary Chinese art market by examining various factors and key players who have brought the art market to its current stage.  I conclude by arguing that the contemporary Chinese art market will continue to grow and if need be, buyers from China will support the market in the future.
