| Abstract | P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center (P.S.1) and The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) formalized their intent to merge in 2000. P.S.1, the contemporary art institution in Long Island City, Queens, is one of the most radical places to view art. It was founded by Alanna Heiss, who continues to run the museum. MoMA is the world’s most famous museum for modern art, located in midtown Manhattan. The merger had no precedent in the visual arts and it did not follow a strict business model. In January 2007, MoMA is entitled to select the entire board of trustees at P.S.1. This paper looks into the history of the merger, and analyzes the departments and functions most integral to the collaboration: programming, finance and development, marketing and communications, and the board of trustees. Though the future of P.S.1 and the merger is unknown, Heiss believes the merger was a way of ensuring the museum’s place in the future. | |
