Abstract

This paper will examine whether and how the quest for funding shaped the identity of late 20th century cultural institutions. As a case study example, this paper will focus on the Guggenheim Museum, to examine recent museums' growth and survival strategies. It will attempt to understand if the Guggenheim's problems are symptoms of faulty concepts, administrative failure, or simply a timing or pacing problem.
