Abstract

This paper will take up the central issues in the debate over collections accounting, and in each case analyze the positions of those in favor of capitalization and those against it. A discussion of the larger context of these debates, and why a seemingly simple accounting problem elicited such an overwhelming response from the museum community, follows. Finally, some alternative models for accounting for museum collections are suggested.
