Abstract

The late museum theorist Stephen E. Weil identified a paradigm shift happening in the museum field from being object-centered to being visitor-centered. Using three Detroit museums as case studies, this paper attempts to illuminate the impact this shift has had on the American museum, its visitors and the interpretation of its objects.
