Program Goals and Objectives
The Graduate Program in Arts Administration at the University of New Orleans prepares students for administrative careers within arts organizations among them galleries museums opera organizations theaters dance companies music production auction houses film societies festivals municipal art programs art education programs and community art centers. The curriculum offers elective courses in nonprofit organizations business and the arts plus required specialized arts administration courses. The program then culminates in a 480-hour internship providing students practical experience in the field.In addition to the academic opportunities of this program New Orleans itself is a unique city rich in culture and possessing a lively arts community that offers student important experience beyond the confines of the classroom.The Graduate Program in Arts Administration offers the ultimate balance of the classroom and the real-world issues of the arts industry. Art administration examines of an arts organization including:* Functions such as exhibits performances education and community relationships* Organizational structures such as staff board membership and audience* Financial health such as fundraising donor relationships gifts grants and spending* Legal issues such as copyrights contracts and agenciesThe importance of networking and building relationships is an important facet of the program providing students with exposure to professionals through classroom guest speakers site visits and opportunities through volunteer opportunities practica and the program’s required internship.The Program begun in 1983 offers graduate training in the field of arts administration on both a full- and part-time basis plus most classes are offered in the evenings and weekends. In this way the Program helps to fulfill the University of New Orleans’s urban mission. It affords practicing arts administrators the opportunity to develop themselves professionally and to earn the credentials increasingly necessary for career advancement while making it possible for those engaged in other professional pursuits to make a successful transition to the field of arts administration.
Students pursuing the Master of Arts in Arts Administration will select an area of arts specialization and will take 36 hours of graduate-level courses to complete the degree.Six (6) hours of approved graduate-level courses in the area of the arts. Students can also opt to apply a practicum in this area. Six (6) hours of approved graduate level business or nonprofit organization electives. Electives may be selected from among current university offerings and may reflect the student’s area of interest from art history to film production.Each of the following Arts Administration courses:* Development Strategies for Arts Organizations* Arts Administration: Legal and Business Application* Marketing the Arts * Music Overview* Visual Arts Overview* Theatre Overview* Internship in Arts Administration (6 hours)Final degree requirements include a comprehensive exam before a student enrolls in an internship. Upon completion of the internship an internship report is submitted for review by selected faculty.
A student must apply to and be accepted by both the Graduate School of the University of New Orleans and the Graduate Program in Arts Administration. Admission requirements are as follows.* A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.* A composite score of 1000 on the verbal and quantitative sections of the GRE or a minimum of 400 on the GMAT. The test taken depends upon the student’s area of undergraduate study.* A grade point average of 2.5 for undergraduate work and 3.0 for postgraduate work on a 4.0 scale.* Satisfactory academic standing at the last college or university attended.* Experience in business and/or the arts is desirable but not required.To apply for admission the student must:* Complete the application to the Graduate School and return it to the Office of Admissions.* Have transcripts and GRE or GMAT scores forwarded to the Office of Admissions.* Complete the application for admission to the Arts Administration program and return it to the Arts Administration office.* Compose a one-page Statement of Purpose” and send it to the Arts Administration office.* Send a résumé detailing arts and/or business experience and a list of those persons from whom you are requesting recommendations along with full contact information for each to the Arts Administration office.* Have three letters of recommendation forwarded to the Arts Administration office.Request application materials from:University of New Orleans Graduate Program in Arts Administration Performing Arts Center, #357, 2000 Lakeshore DriveNew Orleans LA 70148; 504-280-7134 (phone); firstname.lastname@example.org.
